FamilyInSight

Welcome to the Family InSight Web Site

Family InSight Inc. is a not for profit, non-government organisation that has been working with families and children in the Hunter Region since 2001. Family InSight provides a Volunteer Home Visiting Service, Parenting and Early Years, Family Worker, and Kids Patch Programs. Family InSight also facilitates the Hunter Network of Child and Family Practitioners.

All of our programs aim to support the health, well being and development of children and to work with parents to be confident, positive and connected with their communities.

Family InSight is supported by the NSW Government’s Families NSW Strategy and the Federal Government’s Communities for Children Initiative.

Our Programs and Families

Family InSight works with families of children of varying ages depending on the program. We  operate early intervention programs that reach families before more serious challenges develop that may involve the need for specialist involvement from child services and other agencies.

Family InSight also facilitates the Hunter Partnerships and Networks of child and family health practitioners. We provide training, information and capacity building, and work to foster effective regional networks and partnership approaches to service deliver, family support and community strengthening.

Our Volunteer Home Visiting Service is dedicated to families of pre-school aged children (0-5) and primarily assists families to overcome social isolation. Volunteers are trained and supported to visit families in their own homes once a week and provide social and emotional support to parents, model play, interactions and communications with children that is appropriate for their age and development, and support families to link with other supports and services such as early childhood nurses and playgroups. This service operates in Maitland, Port Stephens, Singleton, Dungog, Muswellbrook and the Upper Hunter with some service to Greta and Branxton (in the Cessnock LGA).  Families must be referred to the VHVS program by a health professional such as an early childhood nurse or GP and must meet prescribed eligibility criteria.

Our Parenting and Early Years program works with 0-8 year old children and their families with a focus on positive parenting, early development and learning support. This is about taking a whole of family approach that gives children a firm basis on which to embrace the learning and opportunities offered at school. Positive Parenting, community reading and transition to school programs are offered across the Hunter Region. Families may find out about Parenting and Early Years courses and activities through other services, advertising and other promotions, or word of mouth.

Our Family Worker (Cessnock) program supports families in their home or at community centres through case work, learning opportunities, early learning and transition to school programs. This program is committed to providing some more intensive supports to families experiencing some challenges and again with a focus on child development, positive parenting and connecting with community supports. Families may be referred to this service by schools and associated services, early health practitioners, family services or other agencies and must meet prescribed eligibility criteria.

The Kids Patch program in Raymond Terrace is based around community and school food gardens and works with children aged 0-12 years. The aim is to provide non-competitive activities that support learning, confidence, engagement and health outcomes for children. Children that are particularly challenged by the class room learning environment find this program to be rewarding and engaging.
